Decorate with Gingerbread Men

Sewing your own fabric ornaments offers a wonderful opportunity to embrace the slowness of the holiday season. Taking the time to relax and enjoy the intricate details while stitching each ornament becomes a meditative and enjoyable experience.

Getting started is often the hard part. My advice is to find a designated spot in your home to keep your creative supplies readily accessible. This way, you can easily resume your creative pursuits whenever you wish.

If you want to customize your gingerbread man, have fun with colors and decorations. Often, we unknowingly stick to traditional color schemes, but it can be fun to experiment with different colors and dimensions to create a unique and personal look.

If you don't have ribbons or beads, you can experiment with embroidery or sew small strips of fabric at the wrists and ankles of your gingerbread man ornament.

Got Questions about making fabric Gingerbread Men?

Can I use felt for my DIY Gingerbread Men?

Yes, absolutely! Felt is an excellent material for making DIY gingerbread men. In fact, it's one of the most popular and versatile choices for crafting soft and adorable holiday ornaments like gingerbread men.

Felt is easy to work with, as it doesn't fray, making it perfect for sewing and cutting intricate shapes. It comes in various colors, including brown for the gingerbread men, and you can also find felt with different patterns or textures for added creativity.

Should I use felt or fabric for gingerbread man ornaments?

When making gingerbread men, you have two different approaches based on the material you choose.

When using felt, you sew the front and back together with wrong sides facing each other, resulting in visible stitches that give a more handmade and rustic look. On the other hand, if you opt for fabric like cotton, you can sew the front and back together right sides facing each other and then turn it right-side-out, concealing the seams for a neat and polished appearance.

Both ways make cute gingerbread men, so you can pick the style you like best! This template is designed for making gingerbread men out of fabric, not felt.

How to Make a Felt Gingerbread Man Garland?

If you've already made your fabric gingerbread ornaments and want to turn them into a garland, follow these steps:

Materials Needed:

  • Fabric gingerbread man ornaments
  • Twine, ribbon, or string

  1. Lay Out the Ornaments: Arrange your fabric gingerbread man ornaments in the order you want them to appear on the garland. Space them out evenly along a flat surface.
  2. Prepare the String: Cut a length of twine, ribbon, or string to your desired garland length. Make sure it's long enough to accommodate all the gingerbread man ornaments with some extra length for tying or hanging.
  3. Attach the Ornaments: Take the first fabric gingerbread man ornament and gently fold the string in half. Position the folded part of the string behind the ornament, so the two loose ends of the string come out from the top. This creates a loop for hanging the ornament.
  4. Secure the Ornaments: Use a small piece of thread or a knot to secure the string in place on the back of the ornament. Make sure it's firmly attached so that the ornaments stay in place on the garland.
  5. Repeat the Process: Continue attaching the rest of the fabric gingerbread man ornaments to the string, leaving a small gap between each one.
  6. Hang the Garland: Once all the ornaments are attached, your fabric gingerbread man garland is ready to be hung. You can drape it along your Christmas tree, fireplace mantle, staircase, or any other suitable area for displaying your festive creation.
