I love candy canes, and in our Christmas home, you will find them in all kinds of variations - the soft homemade fabric candy canes, the sugar-coated kind, and the kids' homemade candy canes made of red and white hama beads placed on pipe cleaners. All three varieties find their spots on the Christmas tree, in a cozy blend with other handcrafted ornaments.

Got Questions about making a fabric Candy Cane?

Do I need a sewing machine to make a candy cane ornament?

The candy canes can easily be sewn by hand. On the sewing machine, I sew the two cane pieces together with right sides facing each other, and then I turn it right side out so the seams are hidden.

If you're sewing the candy cane by hand, you can simply stitch it together with wrong sides facing each other using small hand stitches.

I love hand-sewn Christmas decorations as they have a perfectly imperfect look that fits well with the nostalgic and cozy atmosphere of Christmas.

What type of fabric can I use for my candy cane ornament?

I mostly sew with recycled fabrics and rarely shop at fabric stores. Instead, I often visit thrift shops where I find fabric scraps, tablecloths, cushion covers, and curtains. I also come across nice dresses and shirts that are perfect for small DIY projects like making Christmas and Easter decorations.

If you're sewing candy cane ornaments with synthetic or thin fabrics, I recommend ironing interfacing onto the fabric before you start. It makes sewing easier, prevents fraying, and gives the decorations a more solid shape.

How to add personalized touches to fabric candy cane ornaments

Golden beads create a mesmerizing sparkle amidst the Christmas tree lights, making them an excellent choice. And for that extra touch of cuteness, a ribbon bow adds the perfect finishing flourish. If you're a fan of intricate details (just like me), indulge in various embroideries – lemons, cherries, mistletoe, hearts, or anything that speaks to your Christmas spirit!
